A visit to the hospital emergency room is commonly associated with life and death situations. With this, many are likely to link the said place with a list of grand, yet misguided, expectations.
If you have been planning to go and visit the ER soon, here are some of the things you should expect to see and experience:
- Triage System
Although fast-food chains and other commercial facilities follow the “first come, first serve” basis, the hospital emergency room follows a different rule that’s called Triage system. Under the said method, upon your arrival, you will be evaluated by a registered nurse. Depending on the level of severity of your condition, you can be examined by the attending physician sooner or a little later than the others.
This arrangement stems from the fact that emergency departments are specifically designed to look after patients whose conditions demands urgent attention. Although doctors and nurses try to see every emergency patient as quickly as possible, some situations, such as severely injured patients, are likely to cause delays for other waiting patients.
- Registration
Another important step you must take upon your arrival in the ER is the registration. This part is necessary to update your medical record. During this phase, you are likely to be given a consent for treatment and financial responsibility that you need to sign. This document also plays a crucial role as doctors can easily contact and communicate with you based on the information you have given.
- Examination
The method of your examination depends highly on your current condition. From blood tests, x-rays, to other tests, doctors will need to quickly determine the possible methods applicable for your medical assessment. Usually, if you’re in pain, the emergency staff will be making efforts to relieve it instantly.
When it comes to visiting the hospital emergency room, safety must come before anything else. From the triage, registration, examination, to discharge, everything highly depends on your safety and condition.
The next time you get rushed into the ER, be sure to keep these things in mind to avoid unnecessary stress.
